Therapy Dogs

Course Information:

This is a three-part series. Each webinar can be purchased seperately; however, there is a discount for purchasing all three webinars at the same time.

Therapy Dogs Part 1: From Puppies to Future Therapy Dogs – $30.00

Your heart is set on volunteering with your dog. You may want to visit children’s hospitals, nursing homes, or psychiatric hospitals. Or maybe you work in the mental health field and would like to incorporate a dog into your practice to help your patients. The catch is … you don’t have a dog yet. While your heart may be in the right place, please know that not every dog is cut out to be a therapy dog. This course will cover how to choose a puppy best suited for the task. We’ll also cover early critical socialization and training. If you already have a dog you think might be a good candidate, this webinar will also help you determine if he has the temperament for the job.

Therapy Dogs Part 2: Therapy Dog Skills – $30.00

This is a live webinar
Wednesday, May 14, 2025
12:00 p.m. – 1:30 p.m. Central

It’s not enough that your dog loves people. He has to be well trained in order to ensure successful therapy visits. Untrained dogs can be safety hazards for patients, and put you at liability risk. Find out what skills your dog needs, complete with helpful training tips. This webinar will cover necessary behaviors and some fun bonus ones. We’ll also cover some of the typical tests involved in order to register with a therapy dog group.

Therapy Dogs Part 3: Therapy Dog Teams – $30.00

This is a live webinar
Wednesday, TBD
12:00 p.m. – 1:30 p.m. Central

One of the most common reasons why teams fail a therapy dog test is lack of teamwork. Sometimes, there is little communication between the handler and the dog. Some handlers make the mistake of letting the dog do all the work, while they don’t participate at all. Remember, you are a team! It will take both of you doing your best to succeed. During visits, your dog will get all the attention, but you’re working the most important end of the leash! it’s your job to keep your dog safe and to ensure he is having a good time during visits. Your success will depend on your skills in assessing environments, the people you visit, and your canine partner’s stress levels. Learn how you can take your team to the top levels of therapy visitation professionalism.
