Small Dogs: Overcoming hurdles

Small Dogs: Overcoming hurdles with their owners
during training & group play sessions

Pre-requisites OR Target Level of Knowledge: n/a

Course Information:
THIS IS A LIVE WEBINAR
Wednesday, October 14, 2020
10:00am-11:30am Central

Let’s face it – small dog owners are a different BREED of people than big dog owners. They are inherently scared to death that their dog will get attacked. As a result their dogs are often woefully under socialized. They anthropomorphize a TON. They literally view their dogs as their children (hence the dogs in strollers that are perfectly capable of walking!). They constantly misinterpret normal dog behavior for problem dog behavior.Working with these clients means creating a paradigm shift because what you would say to the owner of a big dog will not resonate with these clients. Your manner, your explanations and your solutions have to be tailored differently. This webinar isn’t as much about addressing specific behavior problems as it is about how to frame your explanations in a way that reduces their fears and increases their compliance.

Bark, Snark & Growl Classes

Bark, Snark, & Growl Classes

Course Information:

Part I: The Who, Where, Why & What
In this class, Wendy will talk about the logistics of running a reactive dog class. We’ll discuss which dogs should be in a class and how to assess them prior to enrollment. Wendy will also talk about how to grow your growl classes, as well as the logistics of doing a growl class – equipment, set up, arrival and departure, etc. In June, Wendy will discuss the curriculum she uses for her growl classes.

Part II: The How
Wendy has been doing growl classes for several years, and has seen a great deal of success with them. This class builds on her April telecourse, in which she discussed the logistical issues of running a reactive dog class. In this class, Wendy goes over the curriculum she uses for these very successful growl classes. Although it is not required, it is recommended that you listen to “Bark, Snark, & Growl Classes: The Who, Where, Why & What” before attending this class, as we will NOT be discussing logistical issues, and the logistics are crucial to running a successful reactive dog class.

Understanding Antecedent Stimuli: It’s not just the cue!

Understanding Antecedent Stimuli: An examination of learning theory from the “front end”

Are you an animal behavior consultant struggling to understand why the techniques you are using work perfectly one day and not the next, even though the conditions are identical both days? Are you tired of trying to figure out what triggers provoke a dog’s behavior and never finding a clear answer? Would you kill to crawl inside the dog’s head and conduct an interview? This course will give you the next best thing. You’ll learn to assess the animal’s behavior by better understanding how to evaluate the stimuli affecting him and many of the lingering questions that you have had in the past will be answered! Additionally, you will learn intervention strategies that will help you modify the problem behaviors that you are facing. Wendy van Kerkhove is a self proclaimed learning theory geek and has been doing in-depth research on antecedent control. Her understanding of this subject will greatly enhance your training skills.
