How to Get Behavior

Sometimes we just can’t get the dogs to do what we want, especially as newer trainers. There are many tricks to the trade that we learn as we become more experienced. Fortunately, if we understand the basic principles of “getting behavior,” we can still be effective while learning those tricks of the trade or when those tricks simply don’t work. This course will teach you those basics.

As to CCPDT CEUs: This course qualifies for both KA (Knowledge Assessed) and KSA (Knowledge & Skills Assessed) CEUs. If you wish to receive KSA CEUs, you must submit a video of training an animal (it doesn’t necessarily have to be a dog) using the principles discussed within the course. Here are the requirements for the video:

• The video must be no longer than 5 minutes
• Both the dog and the handler must be clearly visible
  • Ideally, video from the side or at an angle
• The video must not be edited
• The ultimate goal does not have to be reached – this is about technique, and you may not be able to reach the end goal within the time allotted
• The behavior should be a new behavior – one the animal does not know and has not been trained for previously
• The following must be clearly explained, so the assessor understands what is being trained
  • What the ultimate goal is
  • What the current criteria is
    • If the criteria changes (i.e., is raised) during the video, this should be noted and the time in the video noted
    • How many trials are included in each set
• You WILL NOT receive feedback on your video (if you want feedback, contact Raising Canine, and arrangements can be made for a nominal fee)
• You WILL NOT receive your video back
