Raising Canine

Criteria & Rate of Reinforcement – the most misunderstood pieces of the puzzle

Course Information:

In dog training, we have two problems we generally deal with: Behavior problems and basic obedience training. When dealing with behavior problems, we’re usually trying to reduce an unwanted behavior such as jumping up or behaviors related to separation anxiety. With obedience training, we’re teaching a dog to increase a desired behavior such as sit or stay.

When teaching a new behavior, there are for pieces of the puzzle that absolutely must be present if learning is going to happen: Timing, motivation, achievable criteria, and rate of reinforcement. If any one of these is missing, it’s very unlikely the animal will learn the behavior.

As trainers, we generally get timing and motivation right; but criteria and rate of reinforcement is another story! When reading the discussion boards, it really jumps out that many of the problems trainers have revolve around criteria. Hopefully the information presented in this webinar will help with setting achievable criteria.
