The Basics of Parrot Care |
||
Course Information:
Our knowledge about parrots is changing every day. We have not been keeping parrots as pets in captivity in large numbers for long at all. Much of the information we have is purely anecdotal. There are few studies that have been done with parrots, and many of the things we thought to be true 10 years ago in the areas of diet and behavior we now know are not true at all. It is difficult for even the best-educated owner to keep up with this. It should be our goal, as professionals, to acquire and dispense the most up-to-date and accurate information — based in science whenever possible. In addition to lack of knowledge and research in the area of companion parrots, there are many, many different species of parrots – each having different needs! Too often owners, as well as professionals, generalize the needs of parrots and do not realize that each species has specific requirements. Because there are so many different parrot species, in this course, we will be reviewing the nutritional and environmental needs of parrots in general. Each of the areas covered may be thought of as a parrot’s basic needs. Conversely, the ability to enjoy quality provisions within each of these areas must be regarded as living skills for a parrot. Once this course is completed, you should have good, general knowledge of the basic requirements for a healthy, happy parrot. |
