Dear Sue,
I know I've told you in the past that I love
your telecourses, but I wanted to write you a note to tell you how
wonderfully useful they really are. I am currently working my way
through a certification program and I need educational credits in
several key areas of dog training and behavior. I have been able to
pull up the certification requirements and see where I still need to
earn credits. Then, I just turn to the Raising Canine telecourses and
find courses that fit those needs! Because your courses are done on
audio, I can take them anytime I need to and save the money I might
otherwise spend on traveling to a seminar live. I still get the
benefits of having the live course so I can ask questions of the
speakers, but I save so much time and money doing things through Raising
Canine! It makes fulfilling my CEU requirements a breeze.
I also use your dog training teleclasses
when I want to get fresh ideas on a topic. I teach semi-private classes
for problems like aggression and separation anxiety. Even though I have
my own curriculum and methods, I have listened to every telecourse you
have on these subjects and I often find new tips, tricks, insights, and
ideas to keep my classes fresh. Thanks again for the high-quality
speakers and convenient, cost-effective products!

All of Raising Canine's telecourses are audio-taped and put on the Internet so you will still have access to the course if you are unable to attend the live presentation. The audio versions of the courses will be added to this page shortly after the live presentation. They will be organized alphabetically, by category and by speaker; they will also have a designated difficulty level. Some courses will be listed in more than one category.
Remember -- these courses are accessed over the Internet. If you wish to have a DVD version, you must contact Raising Canine for instructions at info@raisingcanine.com.
We have a variety of categories; we have three difficulty levels, and they are Basic, Intermediate and Advanced. The Intermediate and Advanced courses will usually have a recommended pre-requisite. The pre-requisite will allow you to get the most out of the course; it is not required that you take the pre-requisite course, but it is recommended. If you feel you already have the pre-requisite knowledge or skills, then there is no need for you to take that course.
You can search for courses by category, alphabetical listing or speaker. Courses listed alphabetically are below; if you'd like to search courses by category or speaker, click below:

The Basics of Parrot Care - $35.00 Presented by Pamela Clark Difficulty Level: Basic
CCPDT CEUs: n/a
Our knowledge about parrots is changing every day. We have not been keeping parrots as pets in captivity in large numbers for long at all. Much of the information we have is purely anecdotal. There are few studies that have been done with parrots, and many of the things we thought to be true 10 years ago in the areas of diet and behavior we now know are not true at all. It is difficult for even the best-educated owner to keep up with this. It should be our goal, as professionals, to acquire and dispense the most up-to-date and accurate information -- based in science whenever possible.
In addition to lack of knowledge and research in the area of companion parrots, there are many, many different species of parrots – each having different needs! Too often owners, as well as professionals, generalize the needs of parrots and do not realize that each species has specific requirements.
Because there are so many different parrot species, in this course, we will be reviewing the nutritional and environmental needs of parrots in general. Each of the areas covered may be thought of as a parrot’s basic needs. Conversely, the ability to enjoy quality provisions within each of these areas must be regarded as living skills for a parrot. Once this course is completed, you should have good, general knowledge of the basic requirements for a healthy, happy parrot.
Wow! I'm only about 10 minutes in and I can tell that this one will be
one I'll want to listen to over and over to absorb all of the material.
Excellent course, Sue and Dr. Haug!

A Behavior Systems Approach to Learning: Species-Typical Behavior - $25.00 Presented by Eddie Fernandez
Pre-Requisites: Understanding of Basic Learning Theory -- Operant &
Classical Conditioning
Learning involves a complex set of conditions. While most training procedures focus on the explicit environmental control of such behavior (e.g., operant and respondent contingencies), underlying species-typical mechanisms determine much of how this will occur. This lecture will examine how these biological pre-cursors interact with learning to produce the end response. Aspects such as Motivational processes, “errors” in learning (e.g., misbehavior, “superstitious” behavior), and the relationship between the training context and an organism’s niche will be examined. The hope is to better account for how ethological principles and biology in general combine with learning to better produce the desired trained responses in animals.

Pre-Requisites: None Texas Registered Veterinary Technicians: 1.5
This will be a fascinating discussion on the differences between wild and domesticated animals, using wolves and dogs as our subject matter. If you have any interest in ethology or questions about the validity of dominance in companion animals, this course is a must. Empower or Overpower? Reaching the Middle Ground with Our Clients and Our Pets - $35.00 Presented by Dr. Susan Friedman Difficulty Level: Basic CCPDT CEUs: 1.5 IAABC CEUs: 1.5 TX Registered Veterinary Technician CEUs: 1.5
What is the relationship between control and behavior health? Do we empower our pets and risk animal anarchy or overpower them and risk breaking their spirits? In this telecourse, Dr. Friedman discusses what science contributes to the current debate. She will give you answers to the most common client "yeah, buts…" such as, “Yeah but rewards are just bribes”, “Yeah but it’s hardwired”, “Yeah but what if the house burns down”. These ideas present very real obstacles to teaching clients to be effective behavior managers. Also discussed is a hierarchy of behavior change strategies to answer what science cannot: Is effectiveness our only criterion for selecting training strategies?
If you haven't yet taken a course with Dr. Friedman, you've missed an enlightening experience -- don't let it happen again! Dr. Friedman recently contributed the article called "He Says, She Says" to the APDT Chronicle, and she did a fabulous course for Raising Canine on Functional Assessment and Analysis. This is another exciting and valuable course!
Environmental Enrichment Techniques for Companion Animals - $35.00 Presented by Dr. Joanne Oliva-Purdy Difficulty Level: Basic
Pre-Requisites: None
Because of our changing lifestyles, we must begin putting more thought into our companion animals’ mental and physical well-being. Most companion animals lead very sedentary, boring lives and this, as all trainers know, can lead to undesired behavior! Dr. Oliva-Purdy has worked in a zoo environment, where enrichment is a major part of the zookeepers’ job. It is important for the health and longevity of the animals that they be both physically and mentally fit. Dr. Oliva-Purdy will discuss types of enrichment for animals with examples for dogs, cats, birds and rodents. She will give you tools for your own animals, as well as tools for helping our client’s animals.

Evaluating the Quadrant: Learning Theory in Practice - $40.00 Presented by Dr. Ian Dunbar Difficulty Level: Basic
CCPDT CEUs: 1.5
Regardless of individual training methods and techniques, effectiveness (as measured by time and trials to a reliable criterion) depends on a thorough understanding of learning theory. Unfortunately, the creedal principles of learning theory do not necessarily work in practice.
Most learning theory has been derived from observing consistent computers training rats and pigeons. As such, a good 50% of laboratory research findings are irrelevant in the real world, wherein inconsistent humans try to train dogs and other family members. Specifically, most reinforcement schedules do not exist outside of the laboratory, and punishment techniques can be notoriously ineffective.
The most common reason for resorting to the use of frequent and excessive punishment during training is a lack of understanding of traditional learning theory and especially, not understanding the many constraints on learning theory when it is put to practice. Although theoretically and experimentally sound, punishment seldom works in practice.
In just the past decade, as dog training has become more dog-friendly, response-reliability has gone down the toilet. Where are all the prompt and reliable emergency sits and downs? How about three-minute sit-stays and five-minute down-stays? Some trainers no longer teach on-leash walking but instead opt for permanent management. And snazzy heeling and off-leash reliability are quickly becoming distant memories.
Our precious quadrant requires serious practical review. For the most part, consequential feedback comprises short-term rewards and punishments (praise and reprimands), i.e., only utilizing half of the quadrant. Moreover, the relative pros and cons of reward/punishment consequences are more profitably analyzed by comparing the six different types of binomial feedback. The quadrant only really applies to the use of long-term rewards and punishments. However, it is impossible to negatively reinforce a desired behavior (e.g., forced retrieve) without previously positively punishing the dog (for allowing handler to grab it). And so, with negative reinforcement, we are on very thin ice. Similarly, when positively reinforcing a dog with a lengthy reward (e.g., Go Play), the dog will be negatively punished when the reward ends. ("Come Here"—play session over.)
Learning theory terminology is laughably so abominably ambiguous, it is really difficult to know what to do about it. A simple discussion between dog trainers can become very confusing (often leading to disagreements because trainers fail to see that they actually agree with each other). Regardless of what we do within our profession, we should not inflict our flawed terminology on the unsuspecting dog-owning public...it would fry their brains. With dog owners, I suggest we speak in simple jargon-free sentences, explaining how they can teach their dogs to promptly sit on cue, to reliably stay, and to walk like a charm on a loose leash.

Functional Assessment/Analysis: Putting the ABCs to Work in the Real World - $35.00 Presented by Dr. Susan Friedman Difficulty Level: Basic
Pre-Requisites: None TX Registered Veterinary Technicians
In this course, Dr. Friedman shows you how to do a functional assessment using the smallest, analyzable unit of behavior – antecedent, behavior, consequence. Essentially, there are only two ways to change behavior: Change the antecedent, and/or change the consequence. Dr. Friedman will explain how to use functional assessment to pare a client's narrative down to the facts you need to make a realistic hypothesis about the current function of the target behavior and stimuli that set the occasion for the behavior to occur. This will then allow you to create a workable behavior modification plan. Guided practice doing functional assessments is included in this teleconference.

Human Language & Other Animal Communication Systems - $35.00 Presented by Dr. Ashlynn d'Harcourt Difficulty Level: Basic CCPDT CEUs: 1.5 IAABC CEUs: 1.5 TX Registered Veterinary Technician CEUs: 1.5
Linguists have insisted, and rightly so, that human language is unique in its complexity compared with other animal communication systems. This isn’t to say that other animal communication systems are not complex! The main focus of this course, though, will be on what happens when we attempt to teach other animals our own language. While trainers already have an implicit understanding of what happens, in this course we will review experimental attempts that demonstrate the specific constraints on language learning in animals. In short, we will cover the properties of human language that make it fundamentally different from other systems of communication, what other animals are predisposed to learn about our language, and potential implications. This course will focus on communication with mammals only.
The "Hyper" Dog - $35.00 Presented by Stacy Braslau-Schneck CCPDT CEUs: 1.5 IAABC CEUs: 1.5 TX Vet Tech CEUs: 1.5
Do you have, or deal with, a "hyper" dog - high
energy, easily distracted, and out of control? You are not alone, and
there is help for you both! In this telecourse you'll learn about the
causes and origins of this sort of behavior, and how you can effect it
with management, diet, equipment, and training. We will not be
addressing dogs who "merely" get over-exciting on seeing other dogs, or
other particular events, but rather dogs who are distracted by
everything and never seem to be able to focus on you for more than a few
moments. Stacey gives valuable
tips on relationship-building, management and training. She also
discusses the importance of proper socialization, exercise and
nutrition. As an added bonus, Stacy has given you several games you can
use to focus and help the Hyper Dog!
I Was Lured! The 5 Steps to Lure Reward Training - $40.00 Presented by Dr. Ian Dunbar Difficulty Level: Basic
CCPDT CEUs: 1.5
Some trainers have criticized luring, stating that, dogs are trained “better” if they have not been lured. This, of course, is learning theory heresy. Behavior is consequence-driven, not antecedent-driven. A dog is not trained better depending on whether she was lured or not. If she’s trained, she’s trained, and if not, she’s not. In pet dog training, there is an endless quest for the quickest, easiest, most enjoyable and most expedient route to produce equipment-free and gizmo-free, off-leash, response-reliability. The choice of training technique has a huge influence on “time and trials to criterion.” As by far the quickest, and one of the simplest of all training techniques, lure/reward training is the technique of choice for most owners to teach their dog basic manners. Whereas trainers have a little more leeway in choosing a technique for teaching basic manners, for behavior modification and temperament training, food lure/reward training should be mandatory. There is some extreme urgency to prevent and resolve behavior problems. Behavior problems, such as housesoiling, destructive chewing, and excessive barking, kill dogs. Without a doubt, simple behavior problems are the number one terminal illness for pet dogs. Time is of the essence. Similarly, biting, fighting, and fearful dogs are hardly happy, or safe to be around. Consequently, there is simply no time to mess around with time-consuming techniques. We must resolve the dogs’ problems, relieve their chronic (yet acute) stress levels, and improve their quality of life by using the most time-efficient and enjoyable methods available. Other techniques are championed in other specialist training fields, wherein the syllabus is finite and the trainer knows the rules and questions (criteria) before the test or trial and especially, when time is not an issue. Knowledgeable, experienced, and dedicated handlers will train for hours to perfect a desired behavior. However, pet dog training differs markedly from teaching competition or working dogs, from training marine mammals, and from computers autoshaping rats and pigeons in laboratories. With pet dog training, the questions are unknown and the syllabus is infinite—comprising all aspects of a dog’s (and owner’s) behavior, temperament, and training. But the most important difference—owners are not dog trainers; they seldom have a trainer’s education, interest, dedication, experience, or expertise. Trainers should never underestimate their own expertise. Characteristically, techniques that we recommend for owners to train their dogs are entirely different (easier, quicker, and less complicated) than techniques that we might use to train our own dogs. A comprehensive lure/reward training program comprises five stages:
The first three steps focus on establishing response reliability and are all-important in all fields of dog training. In Stage 1, training lures are phased out completely (within a dozen trials) and replaced with hand or verbal lures (handsignals and requests/commands). In Stage 2, training rewards are phased out and replaced with life rewards (a la Premack). Eventually, the cued response becomes self-reinforcing as the dog becomes internally motivated. In a sense, “just doing it” becomes the biggest reward in dogdom. In Stage 3, a reliable cued response is enforced without force, fear, or pain. The final two Stages—for refining precision and for protecting precision and reliability—are primarily for obedience, working, and demo dogs and will only be summarized.

Introduction Into Aggression Cases - $65.00 Presented by Daphne Robert-Hamilton Length: 3 hours Difficulty Level: Basic CCPDT CEUs: 3 IAABC CEUs: 3 TX Registered Veterinary Technician CEUs: 3
This two-part telecourse is designed for new trainers and trainers wishing to begin taking aggression cases (or those who have recently begun taking aggression cases). The course will address several key challenges to working with aggression: different perspectives in approach and learning background; body language and identifying subtle changes in body language; safety and liability issues. This course will give you a new way to look at aggression, a new appreciation for familiarity with canine body language, an understanding of the importance of neurobiology in behavior, as well as resources and references to help you in your work. You'll learn what aggression is and when it's time to modify the behavior -- some forms of aggression are normal and totally appropriate in a given situation or context; however, the majority of behavior cases dealing with aggression lean toward maladaptive expressions leading to potentially dangerous or serious outcomes. You will also learn how various fields of science impact changing behavior and help you assess whether or not to take a case!
As a bonus, you'll also get the audio from a course Daphne did in 2005 on aggression!

reinforcers strengthen behavior when they are certain, swift and strong.
But how do we reinforce a behavior a learner has not yet exhibited? Do
we really need to growing old waiting to capture the behavior that may
never occur? Join Dr. Susan G. Friedman, an applied behavior analyst, in
a discussion of shaping new behavior. With shaping, new behaviors can be
taught and other dimensions changes such as duration and intensity,
without coercion of any kind.
Through
photographs and shaping plans of actual case examples,
Dr.
Friedman, will discuss the following learning objectives: -how shaping works -different approaches to shaping -skills need to shape new behavior -the relationship between shaping and empowerment -adding a cue -prompting and fading -luring in shaping -how to write a shaping plan Meditations on Group Classes: An Interactive Discussion on How to Improve Group Classes - $25.00 Presented by Susan Smith

Motor Patterns, Drives, Instincts, & Fixed Action Patterns: Important considerations when choosing & training a dog - $35.00 Presented by Ken McCort
CCPDT CEUs: 1.5
Certain responses are due to learning and others are based on heredity. Knowing what they are and how they affect the dog are a very important part of understanding why certain breeds behave the way they do. They are also a key element for trainers to better understand whether a behavior is modifiable at all. Severely punishing these innate behaviors can have serious consequences on the dog's well being. This session discusses what these behaviors are and how they affect our dogs' lives with humans.
Hi Susan!
Thanks for having that class by Trish King! This is my 2nd raising canine telecourse and I find them extremely helpful and economical! Trish King’s multiple dog household course was great. I am able to directly apply many of the things she said to my cases (I have several multi dog cases) and am very excited to try out some of her suggestions!
I also took the MRE approach to aggression with Joel Walton. I enjoyed that class too and put one of his suggestions into practice the next day with much success! So, I love these courses, they directly relate to what I do every day and I hope to see more speakers participating!

Order Out of Chaos I: Collecting and Analyzing a Comprehensive Canine Separation Anxiety History - $100.00 Presented by Myrna Milani, DVM Difficulty Level: Intermediate
CCPDT CEUs: 4.5
Course Objective: To provide participants with the critical thinking skills necessary to collect and analyze the diverse background information that contributes to the equally diverse problem behaviors collectively known as Separation Anxiety (SA).
Course Description Although aggression cases often carry more cachet because of the element of danger inherent in them, cases involving separation anxiety displays may pose much greater challenges for behavioral consultant and client alike. The course opens with a brief discussion of these challenges, chief among which is the lack of any definitive definition of separation anxiety. Using case histories, participants explore each element of the general history as it relates to SA. What can the client’s address, the dog’s age, breed, reproductive status, greeting behavior, and eating and play habits tell us about this animal’s potential for SA and how best to approach it? Participants then consider a protocol for the analysis of problem SA behaviors that can be applied regardless of what specific behavior(s) the dog displays. The course concludes with a discussion of how various elements gleaned from the background history contribute to the specific SA behaviors displayed by the animals in the sample cases, as well as SA variations that may occur in other human-canine households.
Methods Prior to the first session, participants will receive three different SA case histories that will serve as the core of this discussion-based course, as well as notes describing each element of the history as it relates to SA. During the course, participants will compare and contrast the information in each element of the case histories with that in the other two. Additionally they will analyze this information with an eye toward answering two questions:
How might this element contribute to this animal’s SA? What additional information relative to this element, if any, would be helpful?
This course is the pre-requisite course for Order Out of Chaos II, which will address the treatment of separation anxiety.

Back to the topPositive Puppy Training Works - $35.00Presented by Joel Walton Difficulty Level: Basic CCPDT CEUs: 1.5 IAABC CEUs: 1.5 TX Registered Veterinary Technician CEUs: 1.5
American families share their homes with an estimated 68 million dogs. Most people bring home their brand-new puppy full of dreams about having a perfect companion who will be their friend forever. How does a new puppy turn into a great dog and companion? "Not by accident," says Joel Walton, Certified Pet Dog Trainer, lecturer and best-selling author. Joel has over 20 years of experience breeding and raising Labrador Retrievers, training puppies and dogs to be great pets, and helping owners solve their puppy dog dilemmas.
Joel will bring his own unique plan for successful puppy training to help puppy parents do their best to get the dog they always wanted. "Positive Puppy Training Works" is Joel’s latest book on his proven nuts and bolts methods to manage and prevent common puppy problems. House training, chewing, mouthing, jumping up, and learning to be left alone when no one can watch them, will all be addressed. Best of all, his methods are fun, fast, and easy, and use ONLY rewards and positive reinforcement and common sense management techniques. You or your club or school can help puppy and dog owners continue to use positive methods with classes that teach canine etiquette without physical punishment and with love.
"Whether you are planning to get a puppy, or you have your first or your fifth puppy, my methods will help you do the best possible job managing and educating your puppy so he can grow up to be the best possible dog for your family," says Joel. Using Joel’s easy MRE System (Management, Relationship, and Education), puppy parents will have no need for "correcting" unwanted behavior after it develops. Puppies and even older dogs can be guided to better behavior using only kindness and rewards. No puppy or dog owner should miss this chance to learn his unique approach!

Practical Applications for Classical Conditioning - $35.00 Presented by Mel Bussey Difficulty Level: Basic CCPDT CEUs: 1.5 IAABC CEUs: 1.5 TX Registered Veterinary Technician CEUs: 1.5
You’ve read all the books, attended the seminars, participated on the discussion lists – now what! You understand the theory behind classical conditioning, but how do you make it work for you in the real world? This course will guide you through the process of using classical conditioning in real life situations – when and how to use it and how to help your clients understand that they are not rewarding bad behavior. Classical conditioning is a very powerful and elegent technique, and – more importantly – a technique which will not only stop the behavior, but change the animal’s perception of the stimulus that is causing problems.
Puppy Professors - Socialisation Science - $35.00 Presented by Nina Bondarenko Difficulty Level: Basic

Resolving Behavior Problems Two Part Series - $65.00 Presented by Dr. Susan Friedman Difficulty Level: Basic
CCPDT CEUs: 3
Although Dr. Friedman is not well known in the dog arena (yet!), she is very well known in the parrot and academic communities. Dr. Friedman is an Applied Behavior Analyst and what Bob Bailey has done for training, Dr. Friedman is doing for behavior assessment and analysis. This two part series will give you a serious taste of what Dr. Friedman has to offer. In 2007 Dr. Friedman will be doing her 8-week course on behavior assessment and analysis via telecourses -- if you are serious about working with problem behaviors, this course is a must!
Part 1: Assessing Predictors and Purposes Behavior is not something an animal “has” but rather something it “does” given some conditions and not others. When we think that problem behaviors are due to something inside the animal we naturally consider it the animal’s problem. When we think that problem behaviors are due to the conditions under which the behavior is demonstrated, we try to change the conditions, that part of behavior we can do something about. In this presentation, a model for assessing how conditions set the occasion for and reinforce problem behaviors is discussed. This model, called functional assessment, reveals answers to the three fundamental behavior-change questions: What (identify the problem behavior in observable, unambiguous terms); when (predict the conditions under which it will occur and not occur); and, why (what purpose does it serve for the bird).
Part 2: Building Behavior Change Plans Systematically After completing a functional assessment of a problem behavior to determine the conditions under which the behavior occurs, the next step in the process of solving behavior problems is to systematically design a behavior change plan. The most successful interventions are those that arrange conditions to make the problem behavior irrelevant (provides the same, or more, reinforcement for desirable alternative behaviors); inefficient (makes it easier to perform the right behavior than the problem behavior); and ineffective (reduces or eliminates reinforcement for the problem behavior). In this workshop, a model for designing interventions is discussed as well as the ethical standard for selecting behavior change strategies known as the “most positive, least intrusive” procedural hierarchy.

Seeing the Forest as Well as the Tree: How to collect and interpret a comprehensive canine behavioral/bond history - $65.00 Presented by Myrna Milani, BS DVM Length: 3 hours Difficulty Level: Basic CCPDT CEUs: 3 IAABC CEUs: 3 TX Registered Veterinary Technician CEUs: 3
Because so much of science-based education uses a problem-oriented approach, it’s only natural that those engaged in treating canine behavioral problems would want to focus the bulk, if not all of their attention on the animal’s problem. However, nothing can be more frustrating—and embarrassing!--than to discover after-the-fact that a critical piece of information necessary to successfully diagnose and treat a canine behavioral problem was missed because an inadequate history was taken. In this course, participants will learn the fundamentals of quality history-taking and how to critically analyze and interpret the results.

The Single Session Model Part I - $35.00Presented by Rachel Friedman Difficulty Level: Basic CCPDT CEUs: 1.5 IAABC CEUs: 1.5 TX Registered Veterinary Technician CEUs: 1.5
Conventional models of private in home dog training usually consist of a series of hour or 90 minutes sessions working on the specific training issues that compelled the person to call for help in the first place. Meeting weekly or twice monthly or creating packages of training sessions may in fact help the client improve his/her relationship in training the dog, but may miss out on the deeper picture of truly communicating an understanding of dog behavior in a real life context. Often the multiple session model disintegrates when clients suddenly “forget” about their appointment, or they cancel due to a scheduling conflict, or any other possible excuse.
In this 90 minute telecourse, learn:
In effect, learn how to translate your passion and abilities in communicating with clients who look to you for help in enhancing their relationship with their canine companion, as well as further developing an improved business model design for both the full and part time trainer looking to increase productivity.
This course will consist of an approximately 1 hour discussion of telephone intake, how to do an intake, how to turn the intake into a customized treatment plan, a breakdown of how to structure the 3 hour session and follow up options to provide both excellent customer service as well as future possible sales.
The Single Session Model Part II: The How To - $35.00 Presented by Rachel Friedman Difficulty Level: Basic CCPDT CEUs: 1.5 IAABC CEUs: 1.5 TX Registered Veterinary Technician CEUs: 1.5
In this 90 minute session Rachel
will walk you through a typical training session from the time she pulls up
to the house until the time she leaves. Includes how she sets up the session
no matter age, breed, size or reason for visit; a review of the treatment
plan; and how she incorporates training into the real lives of real clients.
There will also be a discussion of product sales which can continue the
business relationship beyond the actual training session. Rachel did a
comprehensive survey of 300 past clients and has come up with some
very impressive data! She'll share this data with you in this
course -- the data supports both the concept of the single session model and
the benefits of providing product as an adjunct to your behavior
consultation.
Sit, Jane, Sit: Learning Theory for Humans - $35.00 Presented by Veronica Boutelle Difficulty Level: Basic CCPDT CEUs: 1.5 IAABC CEUs: 1.5 TX Registered Veterinary Technician CEUs: 1.5
So much of dog training is teaching humans.
We spend a lot of our professional time refining our understanding of
learning theory as applied to dogs— How about learning theory as applied to
people? Though we all know that operant and classical conditioning play a
large role, many are surprised to find that another theory— constructivism—
can offer many additional insights into working with and teaching our human
clients and their complex brains. This fun introduction to constructivism
will offer multiple suggestions and techniques for immediate application to
public classes and private consults.

S.T.A.R.: A Training
Program for Shelter Dogs
Difficulty Level: Basic
Pre-Requisites: None
TX Registered Veterinary Technician CEUs: 3
In 1996, Nana developed S.T.A.R. (Specially Trained Adoptable Rovers), a training program teaching shelter volunteers to train shelter dogs at a local Humane Society. S.T.A.R. is now in its 9th year and Nana wants to share her insight with other trainers to help them implement programs in their areas. It is well known that the quality of life for the shelter dogs deteriorates significantly the longer they remain in the shelter environment without intervention. Mental stimulation from training reduces stress, counters the effects of living in a shelter environment, and provides the necessary care to meet the needs required for maintaining the mental health and emotional well being of shelter dogs. Through training, the staff knows the dogs better and this knowledge assists in making appropriate matches. The dogs leave the shelter better behaved and trained than when they first arrived. As a result successful adoptions occur and the dogs remain in the home living out the rest of their lives with their new family. Three major challenges of trainers working as volunteers at a shelter are getting the shelter to adopt the idea & give it a green light, working within the means of the system, and the logistics of getting the program off the ground. In addition to addressing the above problems, Nana will give you specific exercises to increase the dogs’ adoption appeal & chances of remaining in the home once adopted; talk about ways to enhance the quality of life for dogs while in the shelter; and address problems of individual dogs & how to develop training plans in a shelter environment.
Stereotypies: what are they and how do we deal with them - $35.00 Presented by Eddie Fernandez Difficulty Level: Basic CCPDT CEUs: 1.5 IAABC CEUs: 1.5 TX Registered Veterinary Technician CEUs: 1.5
In this course, Eddie Fernandez will discuss stereotypies in animals. Eddie has worked with zoo animals for many years, and stereotypies are a common problem. These animals are in an unnatural environment and when their basic, instinctive needs are not met, it is not unusual for them to develop stereotypies. Companion animals can also develop stereotypies. Eddie will talk about what a stereotypy is, how to assess a situation to determine if it is a stereotypy, and if so, how to resolve the problem.
Stereotypies are not an everyday occurrence for most trainers, so it is important to be able to recognize one if we should run across it; if we do not realize what we are dealing with, we can spend a great deal of time and client money and never resolve the problem. If we realize what we are dealing with, we can make an informed decision – even if that decision is to refer the client to a veterinary behaviorist. Stereotypies are very upsetting to owners and the more we understand, the more help we can give.

Tomāto, tomäto; potāto, potäto – what’s in a word? -- $40.00 Presented by Jean Donaldson & Dr. Susan Friedman Difficulty Level: Basic
CCPDT CEUs: 1.5
Have you ever argued for hours with a fellow consultant only to discover that you are both saying the same thing? Have you struggled to convince a client that their pet is not dominant – it simply doesn’t want to do something or understand what is expected? Although they have very different backgrounds and have spent decades working with different species, Jean Donaldson and Dr. Susan Friedman, have discovered that they share many of the same issues and solutions. In this telecourse, four articles will be discussed, two from each author, as they have addressed the great dominance debate and the need for a standard trainer’s lexicon. Plan to join Jean and Susan in a discussion of the relevance of terminology and dominance. The debate over terminology and effective communication is raging within the companion animal communities! The dominance construct has permeated the dog, cat and parrot communities, and has even worked its way into the world of rodents and reptiles!
