Telecourses are short,
to the point and affordable! And, if you missed a course you would have loved
to attend, you can access an audio version
here! TELEPHONE CHARGES: The phone call is not toll free, so you will be charged for the call. However, there are some easy, inexpensive ways to make long distance calls these days, so here are some ideas: 1. Look into free long distance service. Most major phone companies now have free long distance for a very reasonable price -- less than $50.00 per month. 2. Get a phone call to use just for business. You should be able to find a phone card at any of the big box stores for around .03 cents per minute -- that works out to $1.80 per hour! Plus, it's a write-off as a business expense on your taxes! 3. Investigate services such as Skype.com, which offers free telephone service over the Internet.
Following is a list of live and audio-taped telecourses that are of interest to owners and right below those are AUDIO-TAPED courses.

Assistance & Service Dogs: The Basics - $35.00 Presented by Debbie Winkler Species: Canine
Every dog trainer should understand about assistance and services dogs: what they do, how they’re trained, the special needs of the client, the different organizations, etc. This is a very specialized and important subset of dog training and -- even if we don’t want to be involved in this type of training -- we should all know about it. At some point in our career we will be approached by a client needing these services and we should be able to steer them in the right direction. This can also be a very fulfilling career choice – helping people fill their needs, and working with a dog to do an important job. This class is a must for all trainers who would like to know more about this interesting area of dog training.
The Basics of Parrot Care - $35.00 Presented by Pamela Clark Difficulty Level: Basic
Our knowledge about parrots is changing every day. We have not been keeping parrots as pets in captivity in large numbers for long at all. Much of the information we have is purely anecdotal. There are few studies that have been done with parrots, and many of the things we thought to be true 10 years ago in the areas of diet and behavior we now know are not true at all. It is difficult for even the best-educated owner to keep up with this. It should be our goal, as professionals, to acquire and dispense the most up-to-date and accurate information -- based in science whenever possible.
In addition to lack of knowledge and research in the area of companion parrots, there are many, many different species of parrots – each having different needs! Too often owners, as well as professionals, generalize the needs of parrots and do not realize that each species has specific requirements.
Because there are so many different parrot species, in this course, we will be reviewing the nutritional and environmental needs of parrots in general. Each of the areas covered may be thought of as a parrot’s basic needs. Conversely, the ability to enjoy quality provisions within each of these areas must be regarded as living skills for a parrot. Once this course is completed, you should have good, general knowledge of the basic requirements for a healthy, happy parrot.

Dogs Bite: But Balloons & Slippers Are More Dangerous - $25.00 Presented by Janis Bradley Species: Canine
Dogs are dangerous. And they are more dangerous to children than adults. Not as dangerous, of course, as kitchen utensils, drapery cords, five-gallon water buckets, horses, or cows. Not nearly as dangerous as playground equipment, swimming pools, skateboards or bikes. And not remotely as dangerous as family, friends, guns or cars. In this telecourse, Janis discusses the research she did for her recently released book (of the same name), which explores the reality of dog bites and dog fatalities. This course is a must for anyone concerned about the recent trends in our society which affect specific dog breeds.

The Effects of Domestication on Behavior and the Differences Between Dogs and Wolves - $35.00 Presented by Ken McCort Species: Canine
This is a fascinating discussion on the differences between wild and domesticated animals, using wolves and dogs as our subject matter. If you have any interest in ethology or questions about the validity of dominance in companion animals, this course is a must. It will help you distinguish between normal dog behavior and normal wolf behavior, and will also help you when dealing with a variety of dog breeds, since certain adaptive behaviors have been exaggerated in the selective breeding of dogs. You’ll also learn about instinctive drift, motor patterns and we’ll touch on hybrid wolves. Ken works with the people at Wolf Park on a regular basis and has had extensive experience with pet dogs, wolves and rare dog breeds.
Empower or Overpower? Reaching the Middle Ground with Our Clients and Our Pets - $35.00 Presented by Dr. Susan Friedman Species: All
What is the relationship between control and behavior health? Do we empower our pets and risk animal anarchy or overpower them and risk breaking their spirits? In this telecourse, Dr. Friedman discusses what science contributes to the current debate. She will give you answers to the most common client "yeah, buts…" such as, “Yeah but rewards are just bribes”, “Yeah but it’s hardwired”, “Yeah but what if the house burns down”. These ideas present very real obstacles to teaching clients to be effective behavior managers. Also discussed is a hierarchy of behavior change strategies to answer what science cannot: Is effectiveness our only criterion for selecting training strategies?
Extinction Bursts & Spontaneous Recovery and How Behavior Problems Develop & Extinguish - $25.00 Presented by Ken McCort Species: All, with an emphasis on dogs
This is an intermedite learning theory course which will explain how behaviors develop and increase, often accidentally, through the processes of extinction bursts and spontaneous recovery. Ken will give examples and discuss how to change behavior using this natural phenomenon. You’ll also learn how to measure the changes as you go through your behavior modification program and how to explain the process to clients. Ken recommends that, in conjunction with this course, you should also take “Understanding Antecedent Stimuli: An examination of learning theory from the ‘front end”;” to increase your understanding of how we learn and how the environment facilitates behavior.
How to Conduct an Ethological Study - $25.00 Species: All
Introduction Into Aggression Cases - $65.00 Presented by Daphne Robert-Hamilton Length: 3 hours Difficulty Level: Basic CCPDT CEUs: 3 IAABC CEUs: 3 TX Registered Veterinary Technician CEUs: 3
This two-part telecourse is designed for new trainers and trainers wishing to begin taking aggression cases (or those who have recently begun taking aggression cases). The course will address several key challenges to working with aggression: different perectives in approach and learning background; body language and identifying subtle changes in body language; safety and liability issues. This course will give you a new way to look at aggression, a new appreciation for familiarity with canine body language, an understanding of the importance of neurobiology in behavior, as well as resources and references to help you in your work. You'll learn what aggression is and when it's time to modify the behavior -- some forms of aggression are normal and totally appropriate in a given situation or context; however, the majority of behavior cases dealing with aggression lean toward maladaptive expressions leading to potentially dangerous or serious outcomes. You will also learn how various fields of science impact changing behavior and help you assess whether or not to take a case!
As a bonus, you'll also get the audio from a course Daphne did in 2005 on aggression!
Motor Patterns, Drives, Instincts, & Fixed Action Patterns: Important considerations when choosing & training a dog - $35.00 Presented by Ken McCort Difficulty Level: Basic
CCPDT CEUs: 1.5
Certain responses are due to learning and others are based on heredity. Knowing what they are and how they affect the dog are a very important part of understanding why certain breeds behave the way they do. They are also a key element for trainers to better understand whether a behavior is modifiable at all. Severely punishing these innate behaviors can have serious consequences on the dog's well being. This session discusses what these behaviors are and how they affect our dogs' lives with humans.
